What's New: Kosher French Harissa

Hot and hotter. With flavor.

Harissa is a spicy-to-scorching hot sauce that's popular in Tunisian, Moroccan, and other north African cuisines.  It's used to flavor couscous but it's also wonderful in soups, on vegetables and as a rub (see our recipe for Pan Grilled Lamb Chops with Harissa).

While there are many good ones on the market, Fairway has just received a really great one.  It's called A Riche A La Sauce Harissa.  It's from France, it's kosher, and it comes in two strengths:  regular (with a white label) and forte (with an orange label).  The jars are clear glass so you can see the deep red seeded sauce inside.  Some harissas come with lots of spices but this one is simple:  chili peppers, garlic, water, salt.

Look for it with the other impressive and wonderful imported ingredients that Fairway's Steve Jenkins somehow manages to find and bring to New York home cooks.  A 230 gram jar is $3.99.  Certified kosher by Sous le Contrôle du Grand Rabbinat de Paris.
