Changes at Union Square Greenmarket

Park Construction Forces Temporary Changes

Union Square Park is undergoing a major renovation and it is impacting the Greenmarket.

The $20 million construction will result in a new year-round restaurant being added to the now seasonal pavillion, the tripling of playground space, new bathrooms, the greening of sections of the north end of the park, and improvements that will benefit the Greenmarket.  These include resurfacing the market area and long over-due electrical and plumbing upgrades.

During construction, the farmers and food stalls have been relocated but they're all still in Union Square -- just look for your favorites to possibly be in a different section of the park.  Some stands have been moved to the south end, along 14th Street.  Others that were already along the west side of the park have been pushed down a bit.

The work is being paid for by both the City and private donations.  No one is promising how long all this will take but it's safe to assume that the dislocation will be in effect all summer and into the fall.  But when it's all finished, it will be a great improvement.

So if it's been a while since  you visited New York City's largest Greenmarket, now that spring is here think about visiting Union Square soon and take the time to walk the entire park -- there are farmers everywhere!
