About a year ago I had the good fortune to make a new internet food friend -- Claire Sauerhoff, who owns and is the chief boss in charge of amazing sweetness at The Exceptional Brownie.
While we've told you before about her award-winning brownies, her honey cake is so extraordinary that the food gods should give it its own special prize. Whether after a special holiday meal or on an afternoon with a cup of tea, a slice of this "world's best honey cake" is moist and tender, sweet without being cloying and has a complex, softly spiced flavor. It's made and sold in two sizes: a mini 7.5 oz. or a large 22.5 oz. loaf that Claire says serves 12 but I'd be greedy and cut thicker slices.
All Claire's baked goods are kosher and sold in select New York food stores as well as on-line.
You can buy Exceptional Brownie products in Manhattan at Russ & Daughters, Murray's Sturgeon, Park East and the Kosher Marketplace. In Queens and on Long Island you can find them at Mazurs, Bagels & Co., and Roslyn Kosher.
The best news? They're available year-round, not just for the Jewish holidays.
