Whole Foods sells both organic and conventional produce, organic meats and poultry, cheese and dairy, fish and seafood, grocery items, and prepared foods. Prices range from excellent values to costly, but they have regular sales and specials and their private labeled "365 Everyday Value" products are often well-priced and good quality choices. The company has made a major commitment to local farmers and fish and meat producers.
What's great:
The produce is excellent, especially the large selection of organic fruits and vegetables. The meat department offers a good selection of aged beef and other meats, including ones from local farmers. The fish department has vastly improved from the days when there was little to buy except salmon and shrimp and now has an active sustainability education program working with Monterey Bay Aquarium. The store has made strides in educating its workers in every department so it's not difficult to get knowledgable help.
What to avoid:
Some of the conventional and organic produce has a very big carbon footprint so check the labeling for the country of origin which is clearly displayed.
What to know:
They sell some gluten-free and other allergen-free products, including frozen bread and pizza doughs. Some of the stores have bulk deparments for grains, legumes, dried fruits and nuts. Some of the stores have either their own wine department or a Whole Foods wine store next door. Bring your own bags and they'll rebate 10 cents a bag.
