Lower East Side
Essex Street Market
120 Essex St.
at Delancey/Rivington Sts.

P: 212.982.8200

A new outpost of a Boston-Cambridge cheese monger that's opened inside the plain and servicable Essex Street Market. It's a welcomed addition to the downtown food merchant community, offering an impressive selection of domestic and imported cheeses, especially those from Italy.

The shop is notable among its neighboring Essex Market merchants as selling cheese that is more expensive and more exotic than the goods sold elsewhere in the market. They also have a nice selection of imported grocery items such as olive oils. Formaggio's selection is extensive and the staff know what they're selling. They also encourage tasting and learning and hold classes periodically. One-hour tastings cost $25. Call for their schedule and upcoming classes.
