Food News: June Is Knife Month

I don't know who decides such things as when it's Pi Day or National Nutella Day, or Shark Week. But whomever they are, they've chosen June as Knife Month so let's celebrate.
Maybe you need to finally replace that paring knife with a tip that got chipped when you used it to open a jar of red pepper jelly. Or you want to give a chef's knife to a recent graduate. If so, this is your lucky month.
Because at A Cook's Companion, the splendid cookware store on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, all month all knives (regularly priced and in stock) are 20% off. This is a very appealing offer because they sell all the best brands -- Global, Wusthoff, Henckels, Kyocera, and others. Plus you get to hold a knife in your hand before you buy it, which you can't do at Amazon. And wouldn't you rather buy from a small Brooklyn merchant than the Amazonian?
Or maybe you have a set of good knives that have lost their vigor and you just need to get them sharpened. So head to A Cook's Companion on Saturday, June 18 where you can do well and do good because while you wait, they'll sharpen your knives for $5 each, and then donate all the proceeds to CHiPS, a soup kitchen and women's shelter in Park Slope.
A Cook's Companion is located at 197 Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, between Court and Clinton Streets. Open six days a week (closed Tuesdays).
Don't live near Brooklyn? Check with your local, favorite cookware store and see if they, too, are offering ways to celebrate Knife Month. Knives are our most important kitchen tools so maybe it's time to give them some love.
