What's Fabulous: Biena Chocolate-Covered Chickpeas
I don't usually feature snack foods at The City Cook, but at this year's Fancy Food Show I was introduced to Biena's newest line of chickpea snacks -- Chocolate-Covered Snackable Chickpeas -- and I thought they merited a spotlight.
Launched this summer, they come in three flavors: dark chocolate, milk chocolate, and salted caramel crunchy chickpeas. I am neither a snacker nor a chocoholic but I thought these chocolate-coated roasted chickpeas were outstanding and it doesn't hurt that they're also nutritious.
Biena is best known for its savory chickpea snacks, especially their Sea Salt Chickpeas. Seeing how more of us are trying to eat more healthy foods, even with it comes to snacks, but also love our chocolate, Biena has shrewdly and winningly put a chocolate coating on their healthy and very tasty chickpeas.
To me the coating is more like a glaze. It's not as when you have thickly coated chocolate-covered almonds or peanuts. You absolutely still get the flavor and the finish of the chocolate coating, but the eating experience is more of the crunchy chickpea than if you were eating a chocolate candy.
Biena says that each 28-gram serving (35 chickpeas) has 130 calories, 4 grams of protein and 4 to 5 grams of sugar per serving. They're made in the United States with Fair Trade ingredients and are vegan, non-GMO, and gluten-free. They're sold in 3.15-ounce packs for $4.49.
Biena products are widely available, including at Whole Foods Markets, Target, Stop and Shop, Shaws; online at Amazon.com, SnackAisle.com, and BienaFoods.com; and in New York, at West Side Market and other stores. The chocolate-coated products are just coming into stores now so keep a eye out.
