Joon's Westside Fish Market
Upper West Side
774 Amsterdam Avenue
at W. 98th Street
Regrettably, Joon's closed in November 2017 due to rising rent. We were told that Mr. Joon is looking for a new location in the neighborhood and for the sake of everyone -- both employees and customers, of which I was one at least twice a week -- we hope he has good luck and finds a new home in the northern reaches of the UWS.
This full-service fish monger has been on the Upper West Side since 1986, serving the neighborhood near the big intersection of Broadway and 96th Street. They will cut to order and always have a big variety to offer. On any visit you may find bluefish from Montauk, octopus, wild shrimp, soft-shelled crabs, gorgeous tuna and swordfish steaks, or wild King salmon plus regular choices like sea bass, salmon steaks and flounder. They also have a tank of live lobsters. Prices are excellent and service is warm and friendly.
What's great: They will cut whole fish to order and there's always a big selection of both whole fish and pre-cut fillets. They have a big variety of shellfish, including wild shrimp in all sizes, octopus, scallops, crabmeat, squid, and live lobsters. If it's a holiday or you need something for a special meal you can order in advance.
What to know: The store isn't fancy but is a popular and trusted neighborhood resource. They sell various fish-cooking ingredients, like mixes for crab cakes and seasoned breadcrumbs. They make their own sushi, which is extremely well priced, and also have a large frying station and do fish fries for take-out.
