National chain of stores that sells all things kitchen and cooking.   Large selection, very helpful staff, and enough beautiful things to make you feel under-equipped and kitchen-deprived.

What's great:

Top brands for pots, pans and tools, including All-Clad, Wusthof, KitchenAid, Cuisinart, Le Creuset, and more.  Lots of particular tools and gadgets to do particular jobs, like food mills and funnels.  The stores hold special events like cooking demonstrations by local chefs and food merchants, as well as appearances and book signings by popular cookbook authors.  The William-Sonoma web site and catalog feature excellent recipes.

What to avoid:

Their prices are sometimes higher than you can find elsewhere.

What to know:

Because Williams-Sonoma is so large, they sometimes have exclusives that you can't get elsewhere, like a special color of Le Creuset.  Not every one of their stores carries the same thing since the inventory can vary with the size of each store.  In NYC the largest selection is at Time-Warner.  The company's entire selection is sold on their web site, with some items that are never sold in the "bricks and mortar" stores.
